So thank you for visiting our place, enjoy the open space, the back patio, and an ice cold draft from one of our 20 plus selections of local craft beers. The Dalles has become our new home and we’ve decided to invest in this historic place and do our part to rebuild the downtown area and preserve the historic significance of The Dalles. We purchased a historic home and planned our departure from the daily grind. We fell in love with The Dalles while visiting and decided this was the place we would semi-retire. The last reason for the name is a play on words with us personally. The Vault unfortunately continued this twisted history even into the late 1900’s & early 2000’s and became the last stop in many cases for people on their way to the local jail. The horn saloon which was next door has many stories about these fights. It was in a row of buildings that had lawmen killed as well as cowboys and cowhands, lots of fights spilled out into the streets. The history of the bar had many stories involving ruffians and madams. A second reason for the name is a play on the reputation of the previous bar “The Vault”. ![]() Up until the construction of the Barlow Road, The Dalles was the official “Last Stop” of the Oregon overland trail. In 1846 the Barlow road was constructed and the Oregon Trail was extended and the official end was relocated in Oregon City. It wasn’t possible to take wagons further than The Dalles due to the Columbia river and the steep cliffs surrounding them. ![]() In the early 1840s, American settlers began to arrive in The Dalles in significant numbers traveling overland via the Oregon Trail. The most significant reason for the deviation is the history of The Dalles itself and its early history in relation to the Oregon Trail. For those of you who have noted the history of the building, there are several reasons we deviated from the historic name of the Bank Hotel and subsequently the Vault which was the building usage in the later years. You will see many antique details and discoveries built into the décor of the saloon as well as the hotel as you wonder through. We have remodeled the Saloon taking care to outline the external features of this great building, and keeping intact architectural design elements that were hidden by years of reconstruction and use. We have records of the hotel having several permanent female residents and have heard some interesting stories about those residents. The hotel also had a first class grill in the early 1900’s and at one time was the home of the “Celilo Room”, which was a private bar. It has been called the “Hotel Albert”, has been occupied by the “Citizens National Bank, and the French & Community Bank. The Last Stop Hotel & Saloon was originally established in 1898, it has been the home of many bars and restaurants over the years as well as a hotel and we understand a brothel or “place of negotiable affection.” A phrase coined by Mary Davis a local Historian and volunteer at the Fort Dalles Museum.
